About Me

Hello everyone. Welcome to my world in Dxing.

I’ve been around in dx circles for years and years. I’m an Aussie from Melbourne who has found himself living in Europe.
I started dxing way back in 1976 and most of my listening has been in Australia.

In 2006 I found myself living and working in The Netherlands. We live just outside of Den Haag at a place called Rijswijk (Zuid Holland).

I can tell you it was a culture shock coming to The Netherlands in 2006.
Not only from a social and work sense, but DX wise I’ve had to start all over again. Propagation is different, bands are more jammed packed. So to be honest it has been daunting.

Thankfully the guys in DX Antwerp and the Benelux DX club have been a real help and have showed me the way.

You never stop learning and I’ve learnt some other aspects of dxing like Navtex, NDB, DGPS, DSC and DAB etc.
My main passion remains Mediumwave and FM.
About Me
Age: 60 – Born in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Residence: Rijswijk, (Zuid Holland) The Netherlands – JO22DB

Home towns: Melbourne, Geelong, Victoria, Australia

I first began serious listening in 1976 – Wow now 44 years ago. I can’t believe its been that long. It only seems like yesterday writing out those hand written reports.

Main interests:

Mediumwave - For most of my dxing life this has been my main interest.
FM Broadcast - Not a summer goes by without trying for some Sporadic E
DAB - Its something I have only been into in recent and enjoy trying for some tropo dx. Its interesting hearing the UK, Germany, Denmark etc
Navtex - DSC - DGPS - NDB I really love doing these utility modes but because of where I live, noise restricts me. So I only do these on a limited basis mainly on Dxpeditions.
Tropical Bands, Shortwave. Sadly a thing of the past. Its where I started out but there are few Tropical Band stations left and Shortwave is made up of the big guys like China. All the great stations have left the airwaves on shortwave.
Receivers:
These days I only use the Perseus (SDR) and with that I use Jaguar software for MW Dxing. I still own an Icom R75 - Drake SPR4, Drake SW4A, Kingsley AR7 but these are only gathering dust.

FM:
AIRSpy SDR, RSP1A, Kenwood KT 6040
9 element log periodic antenna (Hoirizontal)
7 element Yagi antenna (Vertical)

DAB:
I use the RSP1A and DAB Scan / Qt Dab. I have a 16 element log periodic.

Best DX Catches:

Mediumwave: 850 Khz – JBC Radio One, Jamaica

Shortwave: 15043 khz Weekend Music Radio – Voice Of Scotland (80 watts) From Melbourne, Australia. So many of the early Tropical band stations.

Navtex: 518 khz Muscat Oman, Japan

FM: Hard to say: Probably some of the Pacific stuff. Low powered NZ or the 10 watt info stations in outback Australia.

DAB: Early days but Cornwall and Munich

QSL's

First Shortwave QSL: - Radio Japan NHK 15.160 kHz in 1976

First Mediumwave QSL: -1593 khz 1XP Radio Pacific – New Zealand in 1983

So there you have it. I'm always happy to chat to other dxers. Please drop me a line if you have found these pages interesting.

My first few logs of the 2021 Sporadic E season. This was done with my ELAD FMD-S2 and SDR Console. The nice thing this season is that SDRC...
